Taiwan, UK host 24th annual trade talks virtually    [2021/10/20]
The 24th annual trade talks between Taiwan and the U.K. were held Oct. 18 via videoconference, with the like-minded partners setting out their commitment to bolstering mutually beneficial business and trade ties, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Convened by MOEA Deputy Minister Chen Chern-chyi and Penny Mordaunt, the U.K. minister of state for trade policy, the daylong event focused on fields spanning agriculture, business, education, energy, financial services, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, talent and technology.

During his remarks, Chen said the U.K. is an important trade partner of Taiwan in Europe. Bilateral trade relations have continued to be fostered through this annual dialogue, which serves as a platform for discussing cooperation and issues of mutual concern over the years, he added.

Taiwan is one of the important markets in Asia for the U.K. where the number of business opportunities is on the rise, Mordaunt said. The U.K. looks forward to supporting Taiwan in energy transition, particularly through the sharing of knowledge in the field of offshore wind farms, she added.

According to the MOEA, trade volume between the two sides totaled US$4.66 billion from January to September 2021. The U.K. is Taiwan’s third largest trading partner in Europe and a leading source of foreign investment, which stood at an accumulated US$10.7 billion as of the end of August this year.
