Improved Tamper Evident Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) Closures for Consumer Goods Products
Introduction Under product liability laws, manufacturers have a responsibility to protect consumers against "foreseeable possibilities." Product tampering is a foreseeable possibility. It has occurred many times, and the legal responsibility to protect consumers against these attacks lies with manufacturers. No package is considered tamperproof. The true measurement of a package's tamper resistance is its ability to resist violation and the difficulty a potential violator encounters in trying to restore the package to its original appearance. This new closure technology overcomes the limitations currently experienced with High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) and metal closures, and also eliminates the need for shrink-sleeves as safety seals. It is set to change the way products are sealed globally, and a serious step forward in ensuring product integrity. It features a PET closure with a molded PET heat shrink safety band. To industry experts, this represents a major breakthrough in closure technology. PET offers significant numbers of benefits compared to other materials in terms of rigidity, clarity and strength. The closure can be used on any size container, soft drinks to wide mouth jars. With an increased focus on PET recycling, this closure eliminates the need to separate the closure or tamper seal from the container prior to recycling, as is the case with HDPE closures. The IP also features a new method of producing PET closures by means of compression molding, which offers a speed and cost benefit to producers.
