Taiwan to stage symposium on independent art spaces in Asia

A symposium on the histories and archives of independent art spaces in Asia will be staged April 11-13 in Taipei City to encourage discourse on the importance of creating alternative art exhibition platforms to supplement conventional venues like museums and commercial galleries.

Organized by the Ministry of Culture and Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab in collaboration with Hong Kong-based Asia Art Archive, the three-day event will involve around 20 academics, artists, art entity representatives and event curators from Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, the U.K. and the U.S.

According to the MOC, the symposium stems from the “Independent Art Spaces of Taiwan” research project jointly promoted by the MOC and AAA since 2022 to document and preserve the legacy of independent art spaces that have emerged across the country since the late 1980s.

Centering on the benefits of independent venues, what types of art to showcase and how such spaces are created, the event will feature one keynote speech, four themed sessions and one roundtable discussion, among other activities.

The ministry said research papers discussed during the event will feature in “Exhibition Histories,” a series published by London-based Afterall Research Centre in association with AAA, the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College in the U.S., Germany-based Documenta Institut, and the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

As part of the symposium, the “Archive, or Found Object: Paint House ex-Situ Preservation Project” exhibition will be staged from March 29 to April 13 to spotlight the project in Tainan City and how such independent spaces are not only exhibition venues but also works of art themselves, the MOC said.
