Ocean Challenge 2025 seeks entries from international and domestic youth aged 12-35 until May 25, highlighting government commitment to encouraging young people to get involved in sustainable ocean development and enhance ocean resilience.
Organized by the Cabinet-level Ocean Affairs Council, American Institute in Taiwan Kaohsiung Branch Office, Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Kaohsiung Office and
Manila Economic and Cultural Office Kaohsiung Extension Office, this year’s event is themed “Youth in Action, Team Ocean” and focuses on aspects of Clean Ocean, Safe Ocean and Smart Utilization of the Ocean.
Applicants are required to submit a written proposal with a maximum of six pages in any language with an English translation, the OAC said, adding that it should include a discription of a current situation, analysis of the problem, implementation strategies and expected outcomes. A pitch video of up to three minutes is also necessary, the council noted, announcing total prizes will reach NT$500,000 (US$16,514).
According to the OAC, every proposal is eligible to make a wish such as serving as a one-day Coast Guard patrol officer. Finalists will receive further support from the organizers to make their wishes come true, it said.
The council expressed anticipation that young people from diverse cultural backgrounds could show visions for the marine environment through the event. It also serves as a platform to bring together global youth to brainstorm for a positive future for the ocean, it added.
Launched in 2019, the Ocean Challenge has engaged nearly 800 participants from 24 countries to protect the ocean, according to the OAC.
