President Lai welcomes Congressional President of Guatemala    [2025/07/21]
President Lai Ching-te pledged to collaborate with ally Guatemala to jointly safeguard democracy, freedom and global prosperity.

Lai received Guatemala Congressional President Nery Abilio Ramos y Ramos, July 17 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. It was his second visit to Taiwan, leading a delegation of cross-party congress members.

Lai conveyed concern over the recent earthquake and expressed hope for swift post-quake reconstruction. He further noted that the over nine decades of official diplomatic ties have resulted in ever-closer cooperation in agriculture, education, medicine and women’s empowerment.

In addition, recently a “Letter of Intent for Semiconductor Cooperation” was signed with the ally’s head of state, President Arevalo, when he visited Taiwan in June this year. Taiwan is working together with Guatemala to implement a training curriculum for cultivating semiconductor sector personnel and supports Taiwan entrepreneurs to take advantage of Guatemala’s strategic position as a hub for overseas market expansion and reciprocal industrial development.

Lai thanked the Guatemalan Congress for supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, as well as releasing a statement opposing China’s misinterpretation of the United Nations Resolution 2758.

Ramos stated that Guatemala cherishes its long-standing mutual bond with Taiwan. He anticipated continued cooperative projects in education, economy and technology.

The congressional president then presented Lai with a Chinese transcript of a resolution approved by the Guatemalan Congress and submitted to the United Nations, which advocates for Taiwan’s engagement in international organizations.
